Welcome To Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Commonly referred to as “Africa’s Garden of Eden,” the Ngorongoro Crater is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the world’s largest inactive, intact, and unfilled volcanic caldera. Formed over two million years ago when a massive volcano collapsed, this natural amphitheater now serves as a self-sustaining sanctuary for over 25,000 large mammals. It offers one of the most unique and reliable safari experiences in the world, where the high concentration of wildlife makes “Big Five” sightings possible in a single morning.

The World’s Natural Zoo

  • The Big Five: It is arguably the best place in Tanzania to spot the critically endangered black rhino, alongside lions, leopards, elephants, and buffalo.
  • Predator Density: The crater hosts one of the highest densities of lions in the world, with prides that have become famously indifferent to safari vehicles.
  • Absent Giants: Interestingly, you will not find giraffes or impalas inside the crater; it is widely believed that the steep descent is too difficult for their long, slender legs.

Best Time to Visit

  • Dry Season (June–October): The grass is short and yellow, making it incredibly easy to spot animals from a distance as they congregate around permanent water sources.
  • Green Season (November–May): The landscape turns into a lush, emerald paradise filled with wildflowers; this is also the best time for birdwatchers as migratory species arrive from Europe.
