Zanzibar Beaches & Stone Town

Zanzibar is the perfect way to finish a safari or a Kilimanjaro climb. The main island, Unguja, lies in the Indian Ocean off the coast of mainland Tanzania, with white sand beaches, warm turquoise water and coral reefs.

Nungwi and Kendwa, in the far north, have wide beaches and sunset dhow cruises. Paje, on the east coast, is known for its long shallow lagoon and kitesurfing. Snorkelling and diving trips leave from several beaches.

Stone Town, the old quarter of Zanzibar City, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk its narrow alleys past carved wooden doors, markets and old merchants' houses.

Inland, Jozani Chwaka Bay National Park protects the rare Zanzibar red colobus monkey, and spice farm tours show how cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon and vanilla are grown.
