The name “Serengeti” comes from the Maasai word Siringet, meaning “the place where the land runs on forever.” This vast ecosystem covers over 14,750 square kilometers of sun-drenched grasslands, savannahs, and woodlands. The sheer scale of the horizon, often unbroken by anything but a lone umbrella thorn tree or a distant herd of elephants, creates a profound sense of isolation and wonder. Whether viewed from a 4×4 vehicle or a hot air balloon at sunrise, the landscape’s timeless beauty is as much a draw as the animals that inhabit it.

The Great Migration

The Great Migration is one of the most extraordinary wildlife events in the Serengeti. Every year, millions of wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles embark on a long journey across the plains in search of fresh grass. Along the way, they face constant threats from predators such as lions, cheetahs, and crocodiles, making the migration a dramatic and dangerous spectacle. The best time to witness this awe-inspiring event is from July to October.

Best Time to Visit

• While wildlife viewing is excellent throughout the year, the “best” time depends on what you wish to experience.
• Dry Season (June–October): Ideal for general wildlife viewing as animals congregate around permanent water sources and the vegetation is thin.
• Green Season (November–May): The landscape turns lush and green, offering beautiful photography conditions, lower lodge rates, and the peak of the calving season in February.
