Welcome To The Tree-Climbing Lions

Lake Manyara National Park, located in northern Tanzania, is a compact yet incredibly diverse wildlife sanctuary. Spanning about 330 square kilometers, it features stunning landscapes, an expansive alkaline lake, and abundant wildlife. With its unique habitats, including groundwater forests, acacia woodlands, and open grasslands, the park provides an unforgettable experience for safari enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.

The Tree-Climbing Lions

One of Africa’s most enigmatic wildlife behaviors can be found in Lake Manyara, its famous tree-climbing lions. Unlike their cousins in other parts of the continent, these lions have developed the rare habit of spending their afternoons draped across the sturdy branches of acacia and mahogany trees. While scientists debate whether they do this to escape the heat of the ground or to avoid biting insects, the sight of a full-grown lion balanced high above the savanna is an unforgettable highlight. For photographers, this provides a rare opportunity to capture the “King of the Jungle” against a backdrop of green leaves rather than golden grass.

Best Time To Visit

  • June to October: The dry season offers ideal conditions for game viewing, as animals gather around the lake and vegetation is sparse, making wildlife easier to spot.
  • November to May: The wet season brings lush greenery, migratory birds, and fewer tourists. It’s perfect for birdwatching and seeing newborn animals in their natural habitats
