The Ngorongoro Crater is 600 m deep, 16 km across and covers 265 km². Around 20,000 large animals live on the crater floor.
Many of Tanzania’s remaining black rhinos graze on the open grassland here, alongside lion, cheetah, eland, zebra and gazelle. Flamingos and other birds often feed at Makat soda lake.
Outside the crater, the Ngorongoro Conservation Area is Maasai country. Some itineraries include an afternoon walking safari with a local Maasai guide through the hills and plains.
