Kitulo National Park protects the Kitulo Plateau, high grassland at about 2,600 m between the Kipengere and Poroto mountains. Local people call it “Bustani ya Mungu”, the Garden of God, and botanists call it the Serengeti of Flowers.
The park was created in 2005 to protect its plants rather than its animals. About 350 plant species grow here, including many ground orchids. During the rains, from November to April, the plateau is covered in wildflowers.
Come for walks across open meadows, cool mountain air and wide views. The park lies about 100 km east of Mbeya, and combines well with Ruaha and the Mbeya highlands.
