Three days in the two parks closest to Arusha, with very little driving. Start with the forests and lakes of Arusha National Park, where you walk with an armed ranger and canoe on Momella Lake, then spend your last day with the elephant herds and ancient baobab trees of Tarangire.
This itinerary runs as a private safari, so you set the pace and the departure date.
| Day | Overnight | Meals |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Mount Meru Game Lodge, near the Arusha gate | Lunch, dinner |
| Day 2 | Hatari Lodge | Breakfast, lunch, dinner |
| Day 3 | Return to Arusha | Breakfast, lunch |
Pick-up in Arusha and check in at Mount Meru Game Lodge, near the Arusha gate. The lodge has a heritage feel, a tropical garden and resident wildlife such as buffalo, monkeys and peacocks. In the afternoon, head into Arusha National Park for a game drive along the Momella Lakes. Look for flamingos, hippos and black-and-white colobus monkeys. The park is open from 6 am to 6 pm.
Start early with a walking safari led by an armed ranger. Arusha National Park is one of the few parks in Tanzania where this is offered, and you get close to giraffes, buffalo, zebras and warthogs on foot. In the afternoon, canoe on Momella Lake for a water-level view of wildlife. Hatari Lodge looks out to Mount Meru and Kilimanjaro.
After an early breakfast, drive about 2.5 hours southwest to Tarangire National Park, known for its enormous elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. Spend the day on game drives along the Tarangire River, where lions, leopards, cheetahs and oryx have been seen, with a picnic lunch in the park. Return to Arusha in the late afternoon.
